Seeds of interest

An aura of pride pulsated around 8-year-old Jason Snyder as he cradled a bouquet of silk flowers and paraded it before a trio of South Strand Garden Club members visiting his school last week.

The Lakewood Elementary second-grade student and member of Earth Tones junior garden club, driven by his enthusiasm, was early in completing an arrangement he plans to enter into a flower show March 30, which will be judged by South Strand Garden Club members, the students' gardening mentors.

Teaching students about gardening, floral design and the environment are just a few of the things garden clubs provide in communities across the United States.

Clubs like South Strand also visit nursing home residents and plant and maintain flower beds and trees along city streets, around libraries and in city parks.

10 things we learned this week

It's been nine years since the Coleman Medallist kicked more than 100 goals (Tony Lockett booted 107 in 1998), leaving many to wonder if the days of the specialist full forward were finished. On the weekend Brendon Fevola bagged eight to lead Carlton to the NAB Cup grand final and Matthew Lloyd kicked a cool seven for the Bombers. Could this be the season a goalkicker once again notches three figures?

2. Supergoals do make a difference Since being introduced into the preseason competition four years ago, the supergoal - a nine-pointer kicked from beyond the 50-metre arc - has often been considered more a novelty than a strategy. That may change after Brisbane's win over Geelong on Friday night, when the Lions' ability to consistently score the extra three points (they kicked three supergoals to the Cats' none) proved the difference.

Julian's week

Writing a fortnightly column means that Im always on the lookout for an experience or encounter that is rich in anecdotal possibilities. So when I read in my diary that on Friday I was to attend a Speed Workshop in lieu of three more fixed penalty points on my already well-requested driving licence, I rather hoped that the afternoon would provide fodder for the NS reader, if nothing else.

The workshop was run by Dave and Irene. Dave could best be described as burly, while Irene was rather glamorous. "What would you like us to call you?" whispered Irene, as I signed in. "Julian Clary," I whispered back, pointing to my name on the list. "Only I wasn't sure if you wanted to remain incognito?" said Irene, knowingly. Not really. I'd been nabbed doing 34 miles an hour in a country lane, not arrested for dogging at Spaghetti Junction.
