The checklist for men includes recommendations about cholesterol checks, tests for high blood pressure, colorectal cancer screening and recent Task Force recommendations on screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, HIV and obesity. The checklist for women includes recommendations about screening for high cholesterol; breast, cervical and colorectal cancers; and osteoporosis. It also includes recent Task Force recommendations on obesity screening and screening for HIV for all pregnant women. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is an independent panel of experts in prevention and primary care. The Task Force conducts rigorous, impartial assessments of the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of a broad range of clinical preventive services, including screening, counseling, and preventive medications.
LANGUAGE THEORIST LAUDED FOR INFORMATION EFFORTS
A professor at Cambridge University is seeing her life's work in natural language and information processing reap a bouquet of awards from major computer science institutions this month. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) announced Wednesday that it has chosen Karen Spärck Jones as the recipient of both the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award and the ACM-W Athena Lecturer Award. Only weeks ago, she was also honored with the prestigious Ada Lovelace Medal by the British Computer Society (BCS). The bevy of awards honor a woman who has been a pioneer since the 1950s in the area of language and information retrieval, particularly in techniques that enable people to interact with computers using ordinary words instead of equations or codes, a key breakthrough that has been instrumental to the development of modern search engines.
Purdy - Earwood wedding
Lorrica Earwood of Rome and Frank Purdy of Silver Creek were married at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church. The bride is the daughter of Jane Earwood of Rome. The groom is the son of Ron and Vivian Warden of Jacksonville, Fla., and Frank Purdy Jr. of Massachusetts. Donald Collum of Cartersville performed the ceremony. Daisy Dempsey of Alabama, sister of the groom, lit candles before the ceremony. A memory table honored the late Y.B. and Darlene Davis and the late Elizabeth Earwood, all grandparents of the bride, and the late Frank Purdy and the late Lamar Miller, grandfathers of the groom. Program attendants were Cori White of Alabama, cousin of the groom, and Rhonda Warden of Jacksonville, Fla., sister of the groom. Erin Phipps of Calhoun attended the guest book.
