Student duo create some floral designs

MILLOM AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB: Chairman, Mary Cunningham, introduced three ladies from Myerscough College, Lancashire, tutor Alison and students Lucy and Claire, at the February meeting. Courses are available at the college in horticulture, landscape design, equine studies, business management, motor sports and many others. Lucy and Claire were studying for a higher education degree in floral design. Their theme was, new ideas and techniques, and they certainly delivered. Alison gave a running commentary throughout as the two students worked side by side, creating unusual but very innovative designs. First was a bridal bouquet in a twisted willow frame with willow branches flowing beneath, lovely pink roses in the centre with pearl pins in the petals. Anne Stoddart thanked the three ladies for a very interesting evening.

Church honors law enforcement officials

A southside Lafayette church is doing its part to ensure Tippecanoe County's criminal justice officials know they are appreciated.

Members of the Lighthouse Baptist Church sang, prayed, worshipped with and honored more than a dozen criminal justice officials during the church's fourth annual Blue and White In Pursuit Sunday.

"Blue represents the professionalism and integrity of the civil government and law enforcement," Lighthouse pastor Bill Murdock said. "White represents the prayers of Christians as we pray for those with authority over us."

Members of the church "are in pursuit" of a better relationship with and understanding of the men and women who do those jobs each day, he said.

The church handed out commendation plaques to 15 officers, judges, bailiffs and others in law enforcement.

He Promised Us A Centennial Rose, And It's Finally Here

Oh, that Rose. Just stunning. And - like so many beautiful head-turners - fashionably late.

Nationally renowned rose exhibitor John Mattia of Orange hybridized the rose to mark Elizabeth Park's 100th anniversary. The centennial was three years ago, in 2004, but the rose is only now becoming available.

Showing off what this city does best

This will be remembered as the season that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios found its way. Aside from one ill-advised men's underwear show, what was on the runway was polished and respectfully reflective of L.A.'s vibrant fashion industry. The number of shows — a mere 23 — may have been at an all-time low, but the quality was up, and the swell of fashion events that have sprung up across Los Angeles this week and into next only reinforces the power of this market and the potential of its anchor event.

We are the leader in technically innovative denim treatments, which Oligo Tissew showcased beautifully; in affordable eveningwear, which Sue Wong did so well earlier in the week; and in contemporary clothing from designers such as Donny Barrios of Crispin & Basilio, who makes fashion-conscious pieces for less than $1,000.
