Student duo create some floral designs
MILLOM AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB: Chairman, Mary Cunningham, introduced three ladies from Myerscough College, Lancashire, tutor Alison and students Lucy and Claire, at the February meeting. Courses are available at the college in horticulture, landscape design, equine studies, business management, motor sports and many others. Lucy and Claire were studying for a higher education degree in floral design. Their theme was, new ideas and techniques, and they certainly delivered. Alison gave a running commentary throughout as the two students worked side by side, creating unusual but very innovative designs. First was a bridal bouquet in a twisted willow frame with willow branches flowing beneath, lovely pink roses in the centre with pearl pins in the petals. Anne Stoddart thanked the three ladies for a very interesting evening.
Rosy returns
Wednesday will be busier than Susan Kreke had imagined. Last week, the florist was listening to the radio when she learned that a St. Louis disc jockey was giving a local couple a free wedding. Kreke, who owns and operates Kreke Florist at 319 S. Long St. in Caseyville, called the station and volunteered a bouquet. The ceremony has since grown to a mass wedding of 92 couples to be held on the Gateway Arch grounds on Valentine's Day put on by on-air personality "Cornbread," of WIL-FM 92.3. Now dubbed "Cornbread's Big Fat Wedding," the dee-jay had called Kreke back to see whether she could accommodate the expanded nuptials. "I said, 'Sure,'" Kreke said. "And he said he would promote my store on the radio. After that, both my lines rang for 20 minutes for extra bridal orders." Wednesday also will be a busy day for the Jan's Hallmark gift card stores throughout metro-east.
House panel kills DUI bill
Lawmakers Wednesday killed a bill to toughen drunken-driving penalties, saying they first want a new task force to review Colorado's patchwork of DUI laws. House Judiciary Committee members voted 7-4 against the bill, despite moving testimony by Gerda Gavrilis. She told committee members how her 25-year daughter, Arlene, was killed by a drunken driver the night before her wedding in 2005. The truck driver who slammed into Arlene's red Volkswagen Bug at 100 mph had been convicted in a prior DUI crash that injured a couple. "In split second . . . the wedding guests became mourners, wedding flowers were converted funeral arrangements" and "Arlene was buried in her wedding dress," said her mother, holding a red-and-white ribbon bouquet from Arlene's bridal shower. "Because of my personal tragic loss, I'm here, with my daughter's spirit, to support legislation that will (prevent) this from happening to another family's loved one," she said.
